PBT assessment: overall result

PBT status:
the substance is not PBT / vPvB
Justification:

The PBT Assessment for this substance is based on the criteria set out in the “Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, Chapter R.11: PBT Assessment” (ECHA, 2012d).

Persistence

Sodium methyl cocoyl taurate is readily biodegradable in one study according to OECD 301B (82% (CO2 evolution) after 28 d). Thus, the test substance does not meet the screening criterion for persistence and it is not considered to be P or vP.

Bioaccumulation

The bioaccumulation potential of Sodium methyl cocoyl taurate is expected to be low, based on the log kow < 3.

Toxicity

Sodium methyl cocoyl taurate is considered as not toxic. In a study on the long-term toxicity of the substance to Daphnia magna a NOEC of 4 mg/L for reproduction was recorded. With regard to human health assessment, a substance is considered to fulfill the toxicity criterion (T) according to Annex XIII of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, if the substance is classified as carcinogenic (category 1 or 2), mutagenic (category 1 or 2), or toxic for reproduction (category 1, 2 or 3), or if there is evidence of chronic toxicity, as identified by the classifications: T, R48, or Xn, R48 according to Directive 67/548/EEC. As Sodium methyl cocoyl taurate is not classified for any of these endpoints, it is considered to be not T.
