Description of key information

Depending on local conditions and existing concentrations, disturbances in the biodegradation process of activated sludge are possible.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The respiration inhibition induced by Triclosan in activated sludge was tested in two available guideline studies conducted according OECD guideline 209. The studies detected a inhibition by 50 % after an incubation time of 3 hours at 11 and 20 mg/l respectively (Ciba Specialty Chemicals 2007, Ciba-Geigy Ltd. 1990). In a further study the effect of Triclosan on nitrification in activated sludge was tested. The study set up followed ISO guideline 1989. The test was terminated after 4 hours and an EC50 of 11.4 mg/l was determined (Ciba-Geigy AG 2003).
