4 -Dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) is a white solid material which is manufactured as non-respirable prills or pastilles of greater than 600 micron diameter, in order to minimize potential inhalation by workers. It has a low vapour pressure and a relative density of 0.96. The substance is soluble in water, with a log Kow of 1.34. It is alkaline in solution, with a pH of greater than 10 (11.28 at the solubility limit) and a pKa of 10.14. At higher concentrations in solution, DMAP forms a nonahydrate (DMAP ▪ 9H2O) which perturbs the system, perhaps organizing the water molecules around itself. It melts at 115 °C, and does not auto-ignite.
