Description of key information

No study on skin and eye irritation are available with the substance. Data from Benzenesulphonic acid, 4-C10-13-sec-alkyl derivatives (LABS, CAS No: 85536 -14 -7) was used to assess the skin and eye irritation potential of the substance. The studies performed according to OECD 404 and 405 guideline showed that the substance was corrosive to skin and eyes. Based on data from analogue substance, H250 sulphonic acid is considered corrosive to skin and eyes.

Additional information

Benzenesulphonic acid, dimethyl-,mono C14-16-alkyl derivative (H250 sulphonic acid) is a UVCB. Based on structural and functional similarities, data on Benzenesulphonic acid, 4-C10-13-sec-alkyl derivatives (LABS; CAS no: 85536-14-7) being registered under REACH, LABS Na (CAS no: 68411-30-3) being registered under REACH and LAB (CAS no: 67774-74-7) being registered under REACH are suitable as supporting study in case where specific data on the substance is lacking.

No study on skin and eye irritation are available with the substance. Benzenesulphonic acid, 4-C10-13-sec-alkyl derivatives (LABS, CAS No: 85536-14-7) was used to cover this endpoint as structural analogue substance.

Dermal irritation study was conducted in accordance with OECD 404 guideline study. The shaved backs of three male and three female rabbits were exposed for 4 hours to 0.5 ml of the test substance and observed for starting from 1 h and up to 14 days. Significant reddening was observed throughout at least day 9. Swelling was perceptible throughout and appeared to become more noticeable with time. Bloody wounds and scar formation were observed through at least observation day 9. The test substance is considered highly irritating to the skin of rabbits and classifed as skin corrosive according to CLP regulation.

Eye irritation study was conducted in accordance with OECD 405 guideline study. Treatment was to the right eye with lower lid removed. The left eye was untreated and served as the control. The eyes were not washed out during the test. Observations were made at 1, 24, 48, and 72 hours and at 6 days after application. The eyes of six rabbits were treated with the test substance and observed for six days. Results indicate that the substance was moderately irritating but because of the intensity of the necrosis formation the study was stopped at day 6. The test substance is considered highly irritating to the eyes of rabbits and classifed as corrosive to eyes (eye damage cat 1) according to CLP regulation.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the data from analogue substance, H250 Sulphonic acid should be classified as corrosive to skin with the R34, Skin corrosive 1C and corrosive to eyes with the Xi, R41, Eye damage 1, according to classification criteria of Directive 67/548/EEC and Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, respectively.
