Description of key information

Citric acid: OECD 301B (CO2 evolution test): 97% in 28 days; OECD 301E ( Modified OECD screening test): 100%  in 19 days; OECD 302B (Inherent biodegradability: Zahn-Wellens test): 85% in 14 days

Iron (III): Not relevant (inorganic)

Ammonium: Not relevant (inorganic)

Sulfate: Not relevant (inorganic)

Additional information

No studies are available for the ready biodegradation of reaction mass of ammonium iron (III) citrate and ammonium sulfate. However, ammonium iron (III) citrate and ammonium sulfate are both expected to dissociate under environmentally relevant conditions (see Section 1.3 of the CSR). Therefore, it is appropriate to read-across data relevant to the ready biodegradation of iron, citrate, ammonium and sulfate. Further details may be found in an expert report (Peter Fisk Associates, 2012) attached in Section 13 of the IUCLID 5 dossier.

Iron (III)

Iron is inorganic; therefore, ready biodegradation testing is not required according to Column 2 of REACH Annex VII.

Citrate

Citric acid is a readily biodegradable substance. None of the available reliable study reports could be assigned as key study due to lack of sufficient information. However, the results are found consistent and reliable for the purpose of environmental assessment of the substance.

Under conditions of defined pH, addition of citric acid to solution is equivalent to addition of the citrate ion.

Ammonium and sulfate

Ammonium and sulfate are inorganic; therefore, ready biodegradation testing is not required according to Column 2 of REACH Annex VII.
