Maleic anhydride is readily hydrolyzed to be maleic acid under aqueous conditions, and maleic acid is expected to be stable in water since there are no functional groups that would lead to further hydrolysis.

A well-documented study, meeting basic scientific principles for ready biodegradability, indicates that the chemical degradation of maleic anhydride is rapid under the conditions of the test. The result gives out a definite conclusion that maleic anhydride is readily biodegradable.

From the conclusion above, maleic anhydride is also readily biodegraded in soil and sediment. Thus, no further study is needed for biodegradation.

The low value of logP as -2.61 indicates that maleic anhydride will be difficult to be bioaccumulated.

Also, Maleic anhydride and maleic acid are not persistent in the environment.
