Description of key information

In accordance with Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 method A.10 Sodium dimethyl 5-sulphonatoisophthalate (SIM-Ester) is not highly flammable.
In accordance with Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 method A.12 Sodium dimethyl 5-sulphonatoisophthalate (SIM-Ester) is not flammable on contact with water.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

During the test according the Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 method A.10. the solid test substance SIM-Ester could not be ignited at room temperature applying an ignition source (flame or glowing coil). No spreading of the combustion was detected. The test item melted when the ignition source (flame or hot wire) was applied. Applying a flame as ignition source at an elevated temperature of 100 °C the pure product did not ignite. Applying a glowing coil as ignition source at an elevated temperature of 100 °C the pure product briefly ignited and rapidly extinguished when the flame was removed. No spreading of the combustion was detected. The test item melted when the ignition source (flame or hot wire) was applied.

During the test according the Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 method A.12. SIM-Ester does not emit any gases in contact with water in any of the steps tested.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the study results, the molecular structure and experience in handling and use, the substance was not classified and labelled as flammable, flammable in contact with water, pyrophoric, self-reactive substance, self-heating substance and organic peroxide according to Directive 67/548/EEC (DSD) and Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP).

In accordance with UN-Transport regulations Sodium dimethyl 5-sulphonatoisophthalate (SIM-Ester) has not to be classified as readily combustible solid in Class 4 Division 4.1 , in Class 4 Division 4.2 Self-heating substances and in Class 4 Division 4.3 Substances which in contact with water emit flammable gases.
