Reference
Endpoint:
flash point of flammable liquids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
16 December 2014 to 05 February 2015
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Remarks:
The study was conducted according to an internationally recognised method, and under GLP. The substance is considered to be adequately characterised with its purity. Therefore full validation applies.
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.9 (Flash-Point)
Deviations:
no
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
ASTM D93 (Standard test methods for flash point by pensky-martens closed cup tester)
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
ISO 3679 (Determination of flash point - Rapid equilibrium closed cup method)
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
other: ASTM D7094 (Standard Test Method for Flash Point by Modified Continuously Closed Cup (MCCCFP) Tester)
GLP compliance:

101.3 kPa

Preliminary study

The estimated flash-point of the test substance was 85.5 °C.

The difference between the results obtained with the two tests was ≤ 2 °C. From this, it was concluded that the flash-point of the test substance is the lowest flash-point obtained.

Interpretation of results:
Category 4 (combustible liquids) based on GHS criteria
Remarks:
EU-CLP criteria not met
Conclusions:
The flash point of test substance is above the classification threshold of 60 °C (CLP criteria) but below 93 °C (GHS criteria). Therefore the test substance is NOT classified as a flammable liquid according to CLP, but is classified in cat.4 according to GHS.
Executive summary:

The flash point of the test substance was determined, under GLP, according to ISO 3679 standard (listed in EU A.9 guideline), using a Pensky-Martens closed cup equilibrium method.

Starting at 63 °C, ignition was tested for every 1 °C temperature rise. Test was performed in duplicate, and the lowest value was retained.

The flash point of test substance has been determined to be 87 °C (corrected to normal atmP).

Description of key information

The substance is NOT classified as flammable liquid according to Regulation (EC) N°1272/2008 (CLP) criteria.

The substance is classified as FLAMMABLE LIQUID category 4 according to UN GHS criteria.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flash point at 101 325 Pa:
87 °C

Additional information

A fully reliable experimental study, conducted according to a recognized EU/ISO guideline (equilibrium closed cup method) and under GLP, is available. It is considered as a key study, and the result is retained as key data.

This study is relevant for the classification regarding flammable properties. (see IU Section 4.13 endpoint summary for justification of non-classification)
