Additional information

Repeated-dose inhalation toxicity studies are available for Methylchloroformate, Ethylchloroformate and Isopropylchloroformate. Toxicity to tissues other than the respiratory tract was not noted at concentrations up to approximately 35 ppm (120 mg/m3/day) Methylchloroformate, Ethylchloroformate and Isopropylchloroformate.   In three of the five repeated dose studies on category members, the inflammatory response in the respiratory tract was severe and mortality occurred at the highest exposure concentrations. The 90-day and 28-day NOAECs for Methylchloroformate were 1.6 and 3.94 mg/m3/day, respectively. The 28-day NOAEC for Ethylchloroformate was 4.5 mg/m3/day and the 28-day NOAEC for Isopropyl chloroformate was 21 mg/m3/day.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Repeated dose toxicity of chloroformates is a secondary effect of caustic substance properties. No classification is warrented. Classification is according to the legally binding classification in Annex VI to EU Regulation 1272/2008.
