Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Hydrolysis:

m-Toluidine is stable at pH 7.0 and 9.0, but it hydrolysed with the half-life time of 72.1 days at pH 4.0.

Phototransformation in air:

The calculated half-life of m-toluidine by photodegradation in air was 1.924 hours with an Overall OH rate constant of 200.136E-12 cm³/molecule-sec.

Biodegradation:

Testing m-toluidine towards ready biodegradability in a modified OECD screening test, 64 % to 84 % of the test item were degraded after 28 d, respectively. Furthermore, the pass level is reached within the 10 day window. Thus, the substance can be scored as readily biodegradable.

In an inherent biodegradation test, the degradation was 97.7 % after 5 days indicating that the substance is inherently biodegradable.

Anaerobic degradation of m-toluidien could be detected after eight months, within 10 months 73 % of the test item were biodegraded in the sulfate reducing aquifer slurries, but no degradaton could be deteced in the methanogenic aquifer slurries.

Bioaccumualtion:

As no data on BCF were available for m-toluidine the structural analogue p-toluidine was considered to assess the potential for bioaccumulation of the substance.

An experimentally determined BCF value for the structural analogue of < 13 indicates a very low bioaccumulation potential.

An experimentally determined logKow of 1.4 for m-toluidine supports this consideration that the substance has a low potential for bioaccumulation. Therefore a potential for secondary poisoning is not expected.

Volatilisation:

The dimensionless Henry's Law Constant (Kair-water) for m-toluidine accounts for 6.8 E-5 determined at a temperature of 25 °C and ambient pressure. Converted according to the "Guidance Document R16, October 2012, Chapter R.16.5.3.2", the value equates to 0.168 Pa m3 / mol. This value indicates that m-toluidine is slightly volatile from water.

Adsorption /desorption:

The adsorption/desorption behaviour of m-Toluidine is characterized by a logKoc of 1.65. This value indicates a low potential for sorption to soil and sediment, and a moderate migration potential to ground water is expected.
