Additional information - workers
Whilst the majority of industrial processes involving Fe3P take place within closed systems (hence present no potential for worker exposure)a small number of processes, such as charging and discharging vessels, do present a limited possibility for worker exposure to Fe3P. On the basis of the available toxicity data, however, Fe3P is not considered to present any significant risk to workers; irritancy and skin sensitisation studies have not indicated any local dermal effects for Fe3P, and so there is no basis on which to a DNEL for local dermal effects (either acute / short-term, or long-term) might be calculated. Effects seen in an acute inhaled toxicity study were limited to the lungs and tracheobronchial lymph nodes, suggesting the possibility of a local effect, however the increased lung weights are consistent with a quantity of residual test material remaining in the lungs at the end of the 14 -day recovery period and enlarged lymph nodes are likely to be indicative of the on-going removal of exogenous material; neither effect is particularly indicative of a true toxic effect, and such findings could be expected of many powders of inhalable particle sizes. On this basis, it is considered that the treatment-related effects observed in the acute inhalation study are not specific to Fe3P, but rather just to particulate material of inhalable or near-inhalable size, and that precautions or risk management measures in place to protect workers from dust inhalation will be enough to protect workers from any risk of inhalation of Fe3P particles. The available data on acute and repeated-dose toxicity does not indicate any systemic toxicity from Fe3P; there were no obvious clinical signs specific to treatment with Fe3P, the weights of examined organs after at lest 28 days repeated oral administration were unaffected by treatement, and no gross or microscopic changes were observed. Fe3P is insoluble in water and inorganic (therefore not anticipated to be soluble in fatty tissue), and therefore not anticipated to be readily absorbed into the body. On this basis it is considered that there is no basis on which to calculate DNELs for systemic effects.

Additional information - General Population
No DNELs have been calculated for general public exposure on the basis that Fe3P is not used or marketed in such a way that direct or indirect exposure of the general public is anticipated. Unbound Fe3P, either as the pure substance or in mixtures, is not used outside of industrial sites. Fe3P is used in powder metallurgy as a density modifier for metal powder blends; once the Fe3P powder has been incorporated into the metal matrix, no significant release of the material from the matrix is anticipated, so while Fe3P may be used in the preparation of articles which may be sold to the general public, it is considered that there will be no exposure of the general public through such articles.
During industrial processing, Fe3P is not released to liquid waste streams; residual Fe3P is collected for incineration. As there is no environmental release of exposure of Fe3P to the general public via the environment is not anticipated.
