Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Parent compound 4-chlorobutyryl chloride: With high probability acutely not harmful to fish after pH-adjustment.
Hydrolysis product 4-chlorobutyric acid: With high probability acutely not harmful to fish after pH-adjustment (depending on the results of the parent compound).
Hydrolysis product HCl: Acutely toxic to fish (pH dependent).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Parent compound 4 -chlorobutyryl chloride and hydrolysis product 4 -chlorobutyric acid:

The acute fish toxicity of 4 -chlorobutyryl chloride (4635 -59 -0) was determined with Leuciscus idus according to German Industrial Standard DIN 38 412, part 15. 4 -chlorobutyryl chloride hydrolyses rapidly, therefore the fish were mainly exposed to its hydrolysis products 4 -chlorobutyric acid and hydrochloric acid. The obtained LC50 (96-h) was 68.12 mg/L (geometric mean). When tested under neutralized conditions (pH-adjustment), the LC50 was > 100 mg/L (BASF AG, 1987; 10F0529/875205). Based on the mentioned study the test substance 4 -chlorobutyryl chloride and its hydrolysis product 4 -chlorobutyric acid are assessed to be with high probability acutely not harmful to fish.

Hydrolysis product hydrochloric acid (HCl):

HCl was tested in a semi-static acute toxicity test according to OECD 203 with Cyprinus carpio. The 96-h LC50 was 4.92 mg/L (acid equivalent to pH 4.3; OECD, 2002).
