Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

L-Serine is readily biodegradable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
readily biodegradable

Additional information

The key ready biodegradability study (2012 -0032 -DGO) concluded that L-serine is readily biodegradable within 28 days. Good biodegradability is further supported by two older studies (Malane and Gerhold 1969 and 81 -0280 -DKO) determining the BOD5.

L-Serine is also biodegradable under anaerobic conditions as shown by Stuckey and McCarty (1984). After 35 days 99% was bioconverted to methane.
