Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

According to an OECD301F study (see 2012 -0032 -DGO) L-serine did not show significant toxic effects to the popoulation of microrganisms in waste water (activated sludge) at a nominal concentration of 104 mg/l. L-Serine is readily biodegradable. Further, in an older publication it was reportet that 29 % of L-serine (initial concentration of 500 mg/l) was degraded by activated sludge after 24 hours incubation (see chapter 5.2.1). This clearly indicate that L-serine is not toxic to activated sludge. This is supported by an old study which also indicate low/no toxicity (81 -0280 -DKO).

In accordance with REACH Annex VIII, No. 9.1.4 column 2, the toxicity test to microorganisms does not need to be conducted as there are mitigating factors indicating that the microbial toxicity is unliekly to occur as well as because the substance is readily biodegradable.
