Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

For L-serine a publication by van de Mortel et al (2010) reports data for an in vitro Bacterial Reverse Mutation Assay (OECD Guideline 471) and an in vivo Micronucleus Test (OECD Guideline 474). Both studies indicate that L-serine has no mutagenic/genotoxic potential. This is in agreement with the result of another GLP OECD 471 Guideline study (2007 -0314 -FGM).

These results were foreseeable as L-serine is a naturally occurring none essential amino acid which is present in significant amounts in human body fluids (e g human blood plasma > 100 µM - LA Cynober 2002) as well as in human cells. It is a basic metabolite and building block of all living organisms and therefore a genotoxic/mutagenic potential could be excluded.

Endpoint Conclusion: No adverse effect observed (negative)
