Data on the stability of 3-methylpyridine in the environment are limited. Hydrolysis of the methylpyridines is not expected to be an important mechanism of abiotic degradation due to the lack of hydrolysable functional groups. Photolysis of 4-methylpyridine by vacuum ultraviolet radiation in the 100 nm to 300 nm band has been shown, although absorption of environmental UV radiation at wavelengths greater than 290 nm is not expected to be substantial. Since 3-methylpyridine has been shown to be readily biodegradable, biodegradation is expected to be a more important environmental fate process than abiotic degradation.
