Description of key information
Appearance:
Aim of this study was to determine the appearance of test chemical 1,4-dichloro-2-nitrobenzene. Available data suggests that the chemical 1,4-dichloro-2-nitrobenzene is yellow crystals with faint aromatic odour.
Melting point:
The melting point determination of 1,4-Dichloro-2-nitrobenzene (CAS No. 89-61-2) was done following OECD Guideline 102 and according to the metal block capillary method. The test was conducted in replicates and Mean Melting temperature range was determine to be 53.1-55.3°C at 972.1hPa.
Boiling point:
The boiling point determination of 1,4-Dichloro-2-nitrobenzene (CAS No. 89-61-2) was done following OECD Guideline 103 and according to the method of Siwoloboff. The test was conducted in replicates and mean boiling point was determined to be 241.3°C at 972.0 hPa.
Density:
The density of Test item 1,4-Dichloro-2-nitrobenzene (CAS No. 89-61-2 ) was determined following OECD guideline 109 and according to the method adapted from ASTM D 854-02. The mean density of the test item was observed to be 1.2616 g/cm³ at 20°C and 970.55 hPa.
Particle size distribution (granulometry):
The particle size distribution of test item 1,4-Dichloro-2-nitrobenzene (CAS No. 89-61-2 ) was determined by granulometric analysis with rotap sieve shaker. The particle size distribution was found to be in the range of 150 micron to 53 micron.
Vapour pressure:
The vapour pressure of chemical 2,5-Dichloronitrobenzene is determined to be 0.00505 mm Hg.
Partition coefficient:
The partition Coefficient n-octanol/water of test chmeical 1,4-Dichloro-2-nitrobenzene was determined by the Reverse Phase High Performance Liquid Chromatographic method according to OECD Guideline No. 117 for testing of Chemicals. The reference substances were chosen according to estimated Pow range of the test substance and generalized calibration graph was prepared. The reference substances were having Pow value ranging from 0.5 - 4.6.The Log Pow value was determined to be 2.870± 0.000 dimensionless at 25°C. This value indicates that the substance is hydrophilic in nature.
Water solubility:
The water solubility determination of test item 1,4-Dichloro-2-nitrobenzene was done as per the OECD guideline 105 by spectrophotometric analytical method as per OECD 101. The water solubility was determined to be 84.095 mg/L at 25°C. Thus the chemical 1,4-Dichloro-2-nitrobenzene (CAS No. 89 -61 -2) is considered to be slightly soluble.
Surface tension:
In accordance with column 2 of Annex VII of the REACH regulation, the study need only be conducted if surface activity is a desired property of the chemical. The chemical 2,5-Dichloronitrobenzene is a reagent used in the synthesis of antitrypanosomal, antileishmanial and antimalarial agents. For this use, surface activity is not a desired property. Hence this study was considered for waiver.
Flash point:
The flash point determination of 1,4-Dichloro-2-nitrobenzene (CAS No. 89-61-2) was done following closed cup method using Pensky-Martens flash point apparatus. The test was conducted in replicates and mean flash point was determined to be 114°C at 971.3hPa.
Auto Flammability:
The self-ignition temperature of chemical 2,5-Dichloronitrobenzene is found to be 465 deg C.
Flammability:
The chemical 2,5-Dichloronitrobenzene has NFPA Flammability rating reported to range between 0 to 1. This suggests low likelihood of the chemical being flammable. Hence this end point was considered for waiver & the chemical is classified as "Non Flammable" for chemical safety assessment.
Explosiveness:
In accordance with the adaptation conditions mentioned in column 2 of Annex VII of the REACH regulation, the study does not need to be conducted since the substance contains chemical groups associated with explosive properties which include oxygen and the calculated oxygen balance is less than -200. The oxygen balance of the chemical 2,5-Dichloronitrobenzene is -95. Thus, this end point was considered for waiver and the chemical is likely to be explosive.
Oxidising properties:
In accordance with adaptation conditions in column 2 of Annex VII of the REACH regulation, the study for oxidising properties need not be conducted if the chemical is explosive. The substance 2,5-Dichloronitrobenzene is explosive since its oxygen balance is equal to -95 i.e. less than -200. Hence this end point was considered for waiver.
pH:
The pH determination of test item 1,4-Dichloro-2-nitrobenzene (CAS No 89-61-2) was done following OECD guideline 122. pH of 1% w/v dispersion was measured with the help of pH meter and it was observed to be 3.66 at 27 °C.

Thus based on the above both data, boiling point was ranges from 241.3 to 267°C.
Density:
The density of Test item 1,4-Dichloro-2-nitrobenzene (CAS No. 89-61-2 ) was determined following OECD guideline 109 and according to the method adapted from ASTM D 854-02. The mean density of the test item was observed to be 1.2616 g/cm³ at 20°C and 970.55 hPa.
