Biodegradation in water: screening tests

A biodegradation study according to OECD guideline 302 B indicates that the test substance (CAS 1738 -25 -6) is easily eliminated from water mainly due to biodegradation processes (BASF AG 1988, report no. 88/03691). As inoculum, industrial activated sludge from the sewage treatment plant of BASF AG was used. According to the report a minor part of the chemical slowly evaporated into the atmosphere (abiotic elimination control: ca. 21 % in 14 d). However, the test flask was sparged with air enhancing the evaporation of the test substance. Hence, observed evaporation may be overestimated due to the applied test conditions and not representative for STP.

In an GLP study, according to OECD 301 A, 3 -aminopropyldiethylamine (CAS 104 -78 -9), a structurally related substance, was found to be readily biodegradable (BASF AG 2005, 21G0264/053110). Municipal activated sludge, taken from a laboratory wastewater treatment plant fed with municipal and synthetic wastewater, was used as inoculum. After 28 days, 90 to 100% DOC removal has been observed. The 10 -day window was kept.

Therefore it seems justified to consider the test substance 3 -dimethylaminopropiononitrile (CAS 1738 -25 -6) as inherently biodegradable.
