Executive summary:

A total of three pre-test trials were conducted in an attempt to generate a suitable chamber atmosphere for an acute inhalation toxicity limit test. The specific objective was to generate a stable atmosphere for 4 hours at the targeted chamber concentration (2.0 mg/L) and a particle size distribution with a mass median aerodynamic diameter (MMAD) between 1 and 4 microns. Prior to each trial, adjustments were made to achieve the desired atmosphere.

The test substance could not be aerolized. All attempts to manipulate the test substance and generate the target concentration in the exposure chamber were ineffective. Initially the test substance was ground in a coffee mill (Cuisinart, Model DCG-20 N) until it passed through a 600 micron testing sieve then further ground in ball mill for 24 hours, however, the material adhered to the grinding media and was slightly wet. The ground test substance could not be used for trials. Therefore, attempts were made to aerosolize the test substance as received. The test substance clogged the aerosolization equipment for each trial. Solubility testing conducted by the testing laboratory indicated the test substance was insoluble in water, corn oil, mineral oil, 95% ethanol and acetone.

The overall results of the pre-test trials indicate that the physical properties of the test substance prevented the achievement of the required testing concentration.
