Stability in organic solvents and identity of relevant degradation products

Description of key information

The stability of the test substance at a particular time period during the study is normally expressed as a percentage of the concentration of the test substance in the solvent extract at that time period compared with the initial starting concentration of the test substance at t = 0. If there is evidence of the compound breaking down under these conditions, further investigation of the identification of the subsequent degradation products may be carried out by using confirmatory spectroscopic techniques.
According to Column 2 of REACH Annex IX (standard information requirements for substances manufactured or imported in quantities of 100 tonnes per year or more) of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, a study on stability in organic solvents is only required, if the stability of a substance in organic solvent is considered critical and the study does not need to be conducted if the substance is inorganic.
Sulphuric acid, compound with graphite is an inorganic solid, consisting of natural graphite and variable amounts of intercalated sulphuric acid. All constituents of sulphuric acid, compound with graphite are inorganic substances.
Against this background a study to determine the stability in organic solvents is not required under Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH).
