Abiotic degradation

The calculated half-life for the photo-oxidation (reaction with hydroxyl radicals) of dioctadecyl 3,3'-sulfanediyldipropanoate in air is 1.86 hours (SRC AOP v1.92). Therefore, the product will be rapidly degraded by photochemical processes if evaporation or exposure to air should occur notwithstanding that the vapour pressure is low. No experimental data on hydrolysis are available but the substance contains functional groups (ester groups) which might be subject to hydrolysis.

Biodegradation

The substance is readily biodegradable.

Bioaccumulation

The high log Kow of this substance indicates a potential for bioaccumulation. However, for various reasons bioaccumulation of aquatic organisms becomes unlikely:

 

1)     The physico-chemical properties imply that water is not a target compartment (e.g. low water solubility and high adsorption).

2)     The substance is readily biodegradable.

3)     Calculations using BCFBAF v3.01 resulted low BCF values (regression based estimate: BCF = 3.16 L/kg; Arnot-Gobas method (including biotransformation rate estimates: BCF 0.893 L/kg upper trophic). A calculated BAF value indicates similar low accumulation properties as suggested by BCF(BCFBAF v3.01, Arnot-Gobas method, including biotransformation rate estimates, upper trophic: BAF 0.893 L/kg).

4)     The diammax average is markedly above the OSIRIS cut-off criterion of 17Ä, with a diamax of 33.724 Ä (OASIS Catalogic v5.11.19). Therefore, the substance is unlikely to cross biological membranes and to accumulate to a significant extend in biota.

 

In accordance with the Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment Chapter R.11: PBT Assessment, these criteria are indicators for a limited bioaccumulation. Therefore, the substance is not considered to be B = bioaccumulative.

Transport and distribution

Dioctadecyl 3,3'-sulfanediyldipropanoate exhibits a high potential for adsorption. Volatilization is negligible.
