Description of key information

A partition coefficient study could not be conducted for the reference substance as the test material hydrolysis within less than an hour to Boric acid and glycerol. The partition coefficient of the hydrolysis products has therefore been assessed, especially for boric acid (log Pow -1.09).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Log Kow (Log Pow):
-1.09
at the temperature of:
22 °C

Additional information

The substance is unstable in water and hydrolyses rapidly (half-life estimated to be less than 1 hour) to boric acid and glycerol.

The partition coefficient of the hydrolysis products have been assessed.

Boric acid:

Although not required as this is an inorganic substance, an experimental result has been derived for boric acid.

The log partition coefficient n-octanol/water (Log Pow) of boric acid was reported to be -1.09 ± 0.16 (22 ± 1ºC), pH 7.5, based on a study conducted according to EU Method A.8 (HPLC method).

Glycerol:

The octanol-water partition coefficient of glycerol has been measured as -1.76 (only measured result available).

Refer to section 13, Ecotoxicological expert report (BAGE: Evaluation of Environmental Fate and Ecotoxicity Properties) for further details of the evaluation of ecotoxicological properties of the reference substance and its hydrolysis products, especially for additional information on glycerol.

Supporting data:

As supporting data, a partition coefficient value has also been predicted for the reference substance (BAGE) using a computer estimation model, EPI Suite v 3.20 (KOWWIN program v1.67). The Log Kow was predicted to be -7.5552.
