Description of key information

A water solubility study could not be conducted for the reference substance as the test material hydrolysis within less than an hour to Boric acid and glycerol. The water solubility of the hydrolysis products has therefore been assessed, especially for boric acid.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Water solubility:
49.2 g/L
at the temperature of:
20 °C

Additional information

The substance is unstable in water and hydrolyses rapidly (half-life estimated to be less than 1 hour) to boric acid and glycerol.

The water solubility of the hydrolysis products have been assessed.

Boric acid:

Cordia JA et al (2003):

The water solubility of the test substance was 49.20 ± 0.35 g/L at 20.0 ± 0.5 ºC, based on a study conducted according to EU Method A.6 (flask method).

Spruit WET (2006):

The mean value of the water solubility was: 48.37 ± 0.62 g/L at 20 ºC.

The mean value of the water solubility was: 36.24 ± 1.03 g/L at 10 ºC.

The mean value of the water solubility was: 62.54 ± 0.81 g/L at 30 ºC.

Glycerol:

Several studies have shown that glycerol is miscible with water in all proportions.

Refer to section 13, Ecotoxicological expert report (BAGE: Evaluation of Environmental Fate and Ecotoxicity Properties) for further details of the evalaution of ecotoxicological properties of the reference substance and its hydrolysis products, especially for additional information on glycerol.

Supporting data:

As supporting data, a water solubility value has also been predicted for the reference substance (BAGE) using a computer estimation model, EPI Suite v 3.20 (WSKOW program v1.41). The water solubility was predicted to be 1 x 106 mg/l at 25ºC.
