Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The melting point of the reaction mass of hematite and quartz is above 850°C. This is the roasting temperature in the production process (see Section 3.1 of the IUCLID). The melting point of all of the major constituents are >1000 degrees C.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Melting / freezing point at 101 325 Pa:
850 °C

Additional information

The melting point of the Substance is above 850°C - this is the roasting temperature in the production process (see Section 3.1 of the IUCLID). The melting point of diiron trioxide, one of the major constituents, was 1565°C (Lide 2002). The other major constituent, Quartz, also has a very high melting point (above 1000 C) similar to diiron trioxide. The melting point of the other main constituent, the Feldspar-group of minerals, is above 1200°C. Thus there is sufficient weight of evidence that the Substance has a melting point above 850°C.
