Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

When a liquid is in contact with air, solid or an immiscible liquid, the energetics of the surface will minimise the area of the interface. Surface tension is the measure of the force that tends to diminish the area of the interface.
According to column 2 of Annex VII (standard information requirements for substances manufactured or imported in quantities of 1 tonne or more) of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, a study needs only to be conducted if based on structure, surface activity can be expected or can be predicted.
Sulphuric acid, compound with graphite is an inorganic solid, consisting of natural graphite and variable amounts of intercalated sulphuric acid. Since the substance has no amphiphilic properties surface activity can be excluded and performance of a study to determine the surface tension is not required under Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH).
