Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Parent substance: Not readily biodegradable (0% in 28 d, OECD 301 F)

Silanol hydrolysis product: Not readily biodegradable (0% in 28 d, OECD 301 F)

Urea: Ultimately biodegradable (OECD 302 B, OECD SIDS 2002).

Additional information

The registered (parent) substance 1,3-bis(trimethylsilyl)urea hydrolyses rapidly under environmentally relevant conditions (DT50 < 10 min at pH 4, 7 and 9, 20 °C, OECD 111) and forms the silanol hydrolysis product trimethylsilanol (CAS No. 1066-40-6) and urea (CAS No. 57-13-6), which are considered the relevant assessment entities for the environmental hazard and risk assessment according to Guidance R.16 (ECHA, 2016).

Since the parent substance transforms rapidly, and urea is known to be inherently biodegradable (OECD SIDS, 2002), the available experimental results obtained using the parent substance as test item are thought to reflect the biodegradability of the silanol hydrolysis product rather than that of the parent substance. Therefore, it is concluded that the silanol hydrolysis product trimethylsilanol (CAS No. 1066-40-6) is not readily biodegradable (0% in 28 d, OECD 301 F).
