Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.12 (Flammability (Contact with Water))
GLP compliance:
no

The test item was friable. lt was sieved to a particle size < 0,5 mm.

Step 1:

The test item in contact with demineralised water showed no evolution of gas. No spontaneous ignition was observed.

Step 2:

The test item was placed on a filter paper floating on the surface of a dish containing demineralised water at room temperature. No evolution of gas was observed. No spontaneous ignition was observed.

Step 3:

The test item showed no evolution of gas after the addition of demineralised water drops. No spontaneous ignition was observed.

Step 4:

20 ml of demineralised water were filled into the dropping funnel of the apparatus. The test item was weighed and placed in a conical flask. The tap of the dropping funnel was opened to let the water into the conical flask. A stop watch was started at this time. Potentially evolved gas was collected and the volume was measured with a graduated cylinder. Three tests were performed. A gas formation was not observed in all three tests.

Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
The test item is not regarded as hazardous in the sense of the European Commission Regulation (EC) No. 440/2008, Method A.12 as no spontaneous ignition and no gas formation were observed by contact with water.
Endpoint:
pyrophoric solids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
no
Key result
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Burning time:
2 min
Remarks on result:
other: Since ignition did not occur within two minutes, the test substance was classified as not highly flammable (for EU regulations) and non-flammable solid (for UN regulations), resp. No determination of burning rate was necessary.
Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
Since ignition did not occur within two minutes, the test substance was classified as not highly flammable (for EU regulations) and non-flammable solid (for UN regulations), resp. No determination of burning rate was necessary.

Description of key information

The test item is not regarded as hazardous in the sense of the European Commission Regulation (EC) No. 440/2008, Method A.12 as no spontaneous ignition and no gas formation were observed by contact with water. The study of pyrophoric properties does not need to be conducted because the substance in known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of times. In the burning test according to EU method A.10 the substance did not ignite.

Potassium perchlorate can be stated as not flammable.
