Materials and methods

Test guideline
Qualifier:
equivalent or similar to guideline
Guideline:
other: DSC test and UN H.4 SADT test
Deviations:
no
Principles of method if other than guideline:
It should be investigated as to whether the sample "Sodium ethylate powder" is a possible candidate for the transport
class 4.1 "self reactives" . Therefore the prescribed tests according to the "Manual of Tests and Criteria, Transport of
Dangerous Goods" were performed.
In order to determine the decomposition energy of the sample a DSC-test (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) was
performed (temperature range 30 °C - 500°C). Additionally the UN H.4 SADT test was applied at a storage
temperature of 75 °C (considering a packaging size of 50 kg).
In the case of an SADT result of <75 'C (packaging size 50 kg) and a decomposition energy of >-300 J/g
(exotherm) the sample is a candidate for the transport class 4.1 "self reactives" and flow chart tests are mandatory
according to figure 20.1 a, UN "Manual of Tests and Criteria" for self-reactive substances (transport class 4.1 "self
reactives" ). Only in case of a decomposition energy of < -300 J/g (exotherm) in spite of a SADT result of <75 °C or
in case of a decomposition energy of >-300 J/g (exotherm) and SADT of >75 °C the flow chart tests are not
necessary and the substance would not be a candidate for the transport class 4.1 "self reactives".

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
• From the DSC-test a value of >-300 J/g (exotherm) was obtained. The result from the UN H.4 test was SADT
>75 °C (considering a 50 kg package).
• According to the UN assessment criteria, "Sodium ethylate powder" is not a candidate of Division 4.1 "self
reactives".
