First-aid measures

Inhalation:- Remove the subject from the contaminated areas soon as possible: transport him/her lying down with the head higher than the body, to a quiet, uncontaminated and well-ventilated location.- Oxygen or cardiopulmonary resuscitation if necessary. - Consult with a physician immediately in all cases. - Take to hospital immediately. - Keep warm.Eyes contact:- Flush eyes as soon as possible it running water for 15 minutes while keeping the eyelids wide open. - In the case of difficulty of opening the lids, administer analgesic ey wash (oxybuprocaine). - Consult with an ophthalmologist and physician immediately in all cases. - Take to hospital immediately.Skin contact:- Immediately bring the clothed subject under shower. - Remove contaminated shoes, socks and clothing; wash the affected with running water. - Consult with a physician immediately in all cases. - Keep warm (blanket), provide clean clothing.Ingestion:- Risk not possible, chlorine is a gas.

Fire-fighting measures

Not explosive. Not auto-flammable. Not flammable. The product itself will not burn. If anything, packaging may be involved in a fire use CO2, dry chemical powders or alcohol resistant foam. If water is used, contain run-off.Suitable extinguishing media:- In case of fire in close proximity, all means of extinguishing are acceptable.Unsuitable extinguishing media:- No restrictionSpecial exposure hazards:- Non-combustible. Contact with flammables may cause fire or explosions. - Contact with organics may cause fire or violent explosions. - Contact with minerals may cause fire or violent explosions. Protective measures in case of intervention:- Evacuate all non-essential personnel. - Intervention only by capable personnel who are trained and aware of the hazards of the product. - In all cases wear self contained breathing apparatus. - When intervention in close proximity wear full protective acid resistant suit. - After intervention, proceed to clean the equipment (take a shower, remove clothing carefully, clean and check).Other precautions:- If safe to do so, remove the exposed containers, or cool with large quantities of water. - Approach form upwind. - Never spray onto spillage or liquid gas. - Depending upon the wind direction, warn people off danger of intoxication, get doors and windows closed and ventilation stopped. - Use a explosimeter/gas detector/ oxygen analyser to determine the areas of danger.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions:- Follow the protective measures given in the fire fighting and exposure controls/personal protection sections- Evacuate or shelter people depending upon the gravity of the situation (consult an expert/or respect a radius of 500 m).- Advice people to take refuge in upper floors and closed rooms and wait for instructions.- If safe to do so, without over exposing anyone, try to stop the leak- Approach from upwind- Disperse gas7vapours with water spray.- Avoid spraying the leak source.- Isolate the area- Cover the speading liquid with foam in order to slow down the evaporation- In case of leaking container, try to reposition it to get the leak in gaseous phaseEnvironmental precautions- Immediately notify the appropriate authorities in case of as spill. - Do not discharge into environment (sewers, rivers, soil,…)Methods for cleaning up- If possible, dam large quantities of liquid with sand or earth.

Handling and storage

Handling:- Carry out all operations in closed piping circuits and equipment - Operate in a well-ventilated area. - Clean and dry piping circuits and equipment before any operations. - Use only equipment and materials which are compatible with the product.-  Keep away from reactive products (materials to avoid: reducing agents, combustible materials, metals in powder, acetylene, hydrogen, ammonia, hydrocarbons and organic materials). - Prevent all contacts with organics.- Avoid contact with water or humidity. Storage:- Store in a ventilated, cool area. - Protect from direct sunlight. - Keep away from reactive products (materials to avoid: reducing agents, combustible materials, metals in powder, acetylene, hydrogen, ammonia, hydrocarbons and organic materials). - Do not store in confined space - The containers must be used exclusively for chlorine. - Containment bund around storage containers and transfer installation. - For bulk storage, consult the producer. - Regularly check the conditions and temperature of the containers. - Storage temperature < 50 °C.Specific use(s)- For any particular use, please contact the supplierPackaging- SteelOther precautions- Provide tight electrical equipment well protected against corrosion- Atmospheric emissions must be avoided- Warn people about the dangers of the product- Follow the protective measures given in the exposure controls/personal protection section- In industrial installations, apply the rules for the prevention of major accidents (consult an expert).

Exposure controls / personal protection

Exposure limit valuesChlorineTLV (ACGIH-USA) 2004TWA = 0.5 ppmTWA = 1.5 mg/m3STEL = 1 ppmSTEL = 2.9 mg/m3Exposure controls- Premises ventilation- Follow protective measures- Detection of small leak with ammoniaOccupational exposure controlsRespiratory protection- In case of emissions, face mask with type B cartrige- Self-contained breathing apparatus in medium confinement/insufficient oxygen/in case of large uncontrolled emissions/in all circumstances when mask and cartridge do not give adequate protection.- Use only respiratory protection that confirms to international/ national standardsHand protection- Protective gloves - chemical resistant- Recommended materials: Neoprene- Non-recommended materials: PVC, polyethyleneEye protection:- Wear protective goggles for all industrial operations.- If risk of splashing, chemical proof goggles/face shieldSkin protection- Overalls- Apron/boots of neoprene if risk of splashingOther precautions- Shower and eye wash stations.- Take off contaminated clothing immediately after work- Consult the industrial hygienist or the safety manager for the selection of personal protective equipment suitable for the working conditions.Environmental exposure controls- Respect local/federal and national regulations for aqueous emissions.

Stability and reactivity

Conditions to aviod:- MoistureMaterials to avoid- React with most of materials, in particular:- Reducing agents- Combustible materials- Some metals in powder- Acetylene- Hydrogen- Ammonia- Hydrocarbons- Organic materialsHazardous decomposition products- NegligibleOther information- Extremely reactive products described above: spontaneous ignition or explosion- Violent reaction with dry titane- Corrosive action on some metals when moisture- The product -liquid form- is not compatible with titane, ebonite, rubbers, pVC, polyethylene and polypropylene (use resilient stainless at 40°C)

Disposal considerations

Waste treatment- Dispose in compliance with local/federal and national regulations.- Absorb the product in an alkaline solution (caustic soda or sodium carbonate).- Reduce the product with sulfite, pyrosulfite or alkaline thiosulfate.Packaging treatment:- To avoid treatments, as far as possible, use dedicated containers.- Do not rinse the dedicated containers.
