Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The test is not applicable for chlorine as the organic phase will be oxidised immediately. For chlorine the log Pow was calculated to be - 0.85. For hypochlorous acid a log Pow was calculated to be - 0.87. Both values were calculated using KOWWIN v1.67.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Log Kow (Log Pow):
-0.85
at the temperature of:
20 °C

Additional information

Chlorine is soluble in water below pH 4. Above pH 4, chlorine reacts with water to form hypochlorous acid. Both, chlorine and hypochlorous acid have strong oxidising properties and will react with the organic octanol phase. An octanol/ water distribution equilibrium can therefore not be defined. As a consequence, neither the shake flask (OECD 107) nor the HPLC method (OECD 117) were technically feasible.

For chlorine, a log Pow was calculated to be: log Pow : - 0.85. For hypochlorous acid, a log Pow was calculated to be: log Pow : - 0.87. Both values were calculated using KOWWIN v1.67.
