Description of key information

Solubility of chlorine in pure water is determined to be 9.78 g/L at 10°C, 7.41 g/L at 20°C and 5.91 g/L at 30°C. All values are given for a pH of approximately 7.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Water solubility:
7 410 mg/L
at the temperature of:
20 °C

Additional information

The solubility of chlorine in pure water is complicated by two factors:

1. Chlorine reacts chemically with water, hydrolysing to form HCl and HClO. This effect increase at pH above 4.

2. At relatively low temperature and at pressures near to atmospheric, chlorine forms a hydrate which separates out. For the solubilities, it is assumed that all of the chlorine-containing species are present.
