Additional information

Bromine is not mutagenic or clastogenic as confirmed in an in vivo mutagenicity study.

Short description of key information:
Mutagenic activity of bromine was observed in in vitro mutagenicity studies in bacteria and mammalian cells. An in vitro clastogenicity study in mammalian cells was not performed as an existing in vivo mouse micronucleus study showed no evidence of clastogenic effects. Determination of potential mutagencity is complicated by the known action of halogens, chlorine in particular to give equivocal or even “false positive” results in vitro. There was no indication of mutagenicity in the in vivo mouse micronucleus study..

Endpoint Conclusion: No adverse effect observed (negative)

Justification for classification or non-classification

Bromine is not mutagenic or clastogenic with or without activation in in vitro and in vivo mutagenicity studies.
