Two studies investigating the short-term toxicity of Fatty acids, C18-unsatd., dimers, mixed esters with oleic acid and trimethylolpropane (CAS No. 147256-33-5) to freshwater fish are available. The key study was performed under semi-static conditions according to GLP and OECD guideline 203 using Oncorhynchus mykiss as test organism (Goodband, 2012). In a limit test the water-accommodated-fraction of a 100 mg/L stock solution was tested. TOC analysis of the test substance showed no significant amounts of carbon to be present due to the low water solubility (< limit of quantification). No effects were observed after 96 h. Hence, the 96 h-LL50 is determined to be > 100 mg/L based on the nominal test concentrations.

A supporting static GLP study performed according to OECD guideline 203 using Brachydanio rerio as test organism confirms this result (Guhl, 1991). In this static test a 96 h-LC 50 is determined to be 5500 mg/L (nominal). DOC analysis revealed that only a very low amount of the test substance was dissolved. As the undissolved test material was not removed from the test system, the adverse effects at very high test concentrations (10,000 mg/L) are considered to be caused by physical interactions rather than systemic toxicity. In conclusion, no lethal effects of Fatty acids, C18-unsatd., dimers, mixed esters with oleic acid and trimethylolpropane were observed up to the water solubility limit.
