- Conclusion
7-AMCA has no explosive properties with regard to shock or friction, but it has - in this experiment - "explosive properties" with regard to heat, which are meanwhile considered to be false positive ones.
- Executive summary:
Methods
The explosive properties were determined using the following methods:
• The BAM (Bundesanstalt fuer Materialforschung und -pruefung, Berlin) fall hammer test which is a test for mechanical sensitivity.
• The BAM friction test which is a test for mechanical sensitivity with respect to friction.
• The KOENEN steel tube test which is a test for thermal sensitivity.
Results
BAM fall hammer test: In none of the 6 tests any sign of ignition or explosion was observed with the test substance. There were no flames, no sparks and no bang.
BAM friction test: All 6 tests with the test substance showed the same results. There were no signs of an ignition or explosion, no flames, no sparks and no crepitating.
KOENEN steel tube test:
A fragmentation of the tube into 3 pieces which were connected by narrow strips of metal was observed in the test with the 2 mm orifice plate. This was interpreted as an explosion in the test report. An updated interpretation is found in the summary record on explosiveness.

7-AMCA caused a blockage of the orifice of the steel tubes during heating. The tube was fragmented. It can not be excluded that a destruction of the tube would probably occur at further tests, due to the blockage of the orifice.
The substance was heated in a mini-autoclave. The decomposition was determined by a increase of temperture and pressure. The determined rate of pressure increase was below 1 bar/s. Class 1 substance should have a rate of pressure increase of >= 150 bar/s.
BAM fall hammer test:
In none of the 6 tests any sign of ignition or explosion was observed with the test substance. There were no flames, no sparks and no bang.
BAM friction test:
All 6 tests with the test substance showed the same results.
Reference substance:
1,3-dinitrobenzene did not explode in the BAM fall hammer test and the BAM friction test, as expected.
Description of key information
The substance contains no chemical groups associated with explosivity, as they are listed in the ECHA "Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment" or the ECHA "Guidance on the Application of the CLP Criteria".
Additional experimental studies were performed:
BAM fall hammer test: In none of the 6 tests any sign of ignition or explosion was observed with the test substance. There were no flames, no sparks and no bang.
BAM friction test: All 6 tests with the test substance showed the same results. There were no signs of an ignition or explosion, no flames, no sparks and no crepitating.
KOENEN steel tube test:
A fragmentation of the tube into 3 pieces which were connected by narrow strips of metal was
observed in the test with the 2 mm orifice plate. This was first interpreted as an explosion
in the test report. Further experiments showed a blockage of the 2 mm orifice by foaming of the
test substance as cause for the fragmentation of the tube. Also the pressure increase rate was
much below the value needed for a classification in Class 1.
The fragmentation is a false positive finding.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Explosiveness:
- non explosive
Additional information
Justification for classification or non-classification
No justification for a classification was obtained.
