Link to relevant study record(s)
- Endpoint:
- oxidising solids
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Study period:
- 14th to 15th July 2010
- Reliability:
- 2 (reliable with restrictions)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- guideline study with acceptable restrictions
- Remarks:
- Total number of replicates was 5 instead of 6 as indicated by the test guideline. No results of the individual replicates were provided.
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- EU Method A.17 (Oxidising Properties (Solids))
- Deviations:
- yes
- Remarks:
- Five instead of 6 replicates were performed. No detailed results on the individual replicates were provided and thus the difference from the arithmetic mean could not be assessed.
- GLP compliance:
- no
- Contact with:
- powdered cellulose
- Sample tested:
- test mixture (not specified)
- Parameter:
- maximum burning rate
- Result:
- 0.606 mm/s
- Remarks on result:
- other: 90% cellulose / 10% test material
- Sample tested:
- reference mixture (not specified)
- Parameter:
- maximum burning rate
- Result:
- 0.909 mm/s
- Remarks on result:
- other: 100% cellulose
- Sample tested:
- reference mixture (not specified)
- Parameter:
- maximum burning rate
- Result:
- 0.975 mm/s
- Remarks on result:
- other: 40% cellulose / 60% BaNO3
- Interpretation of results:
- GHS criteria not met
- Conclusions:
- Zirconium dichloride oxide is considered not to have oxidising properties as the burning rates obtained are below the burning rate of the cellulose/BaNO3 sample.
Reference
The results in below table are the average of 5 runs, where complete combustion was recorded.
Burn time over 200 mm | Mixture (cellulose to substance) | Burn rate (mm/s) |
3 min 40s | 100:0 | 0.909 |
5 min 30s | 90:10 | 0.606 |
Stopped after 100 mm | 80:20 | NA |
Did not propagate | 50:50 | NA |
3 min 25s | 40:60 (BaNO3) | 0.975 |
Observations: during the test the flame observed with the barium nitrate / cellulose mixture was a green/yellow flame, where the flame was readily visible throughout the test, while with the only propagated zirconium dichloride oxide (ZOC) test (10% ZOC / 90% cellulose) the yellow flame was only very occasionally visible, and the combustion was much less vigorous.
Description of key information
Zirconium dichloride oxide is concluded not to have oxidising properties based on the results of an EC A.17 test (Butler, 2010).
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Oxidising properties:
- non oxidising
Additional information
In the test performed by Butler (2010), the maximum burning rates of the test material/cellulose mixtures were below the burning rates obtained for the reference mixture. Therefore, zirconium dichloride oxide was concluded not to have oxidising properties.
Justification for classification or non-classification
Zirconium dichloride oxide is concluded not to have oxidising properties based on the results of an EC A.17 test (Butler, 2010).
