Biodegradation in soil

Description of key information

Vinyl chloride was biodegradaded completely in soil under aerobic conditions after 108 days (Davis & Carpenter, 1990). In anaerobic microcosms with methanogenic bed sediments, 98% biodegradation was found after 70 days. Degradation products were carbon dioxide, methane, ethane and ethene (Bradley, 1999).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Under aerobic and anaerobic conditions biodegradation of vinyl chloride was found. Both studies will be used in the assessment.
