water solubility
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
2 June 1987 to 15 July 1987
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
comparable to guideline study
Qualifier:
equivalent or similar to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.6 (Water Solubility)
Principles of method if other than guideline:
Captan was dissolved in acetone which was evaporated under reduced pressure. Water was addded and allowed to saturate with captan. The saturated water was subsequently analysed by HPLC with UV detection after 2, 5, 7 and 23 hours.
GLP compliance:
no
Type of method:
flask method

Conclusions:
Interpretation of results: Slightly soluble (0.1-100 mg/L). Captan was found to be slightly soluble with 3.77 mg/mL at 25 °C and a equilibrium time of 5 hours.
Executive summary:

Captan is slightly soluble and is well known to be unstable in water (refer to hydrolysis studies).

In case of cleaning processes effects on water emissions are expected to be low. Effective cleaning can only be done by use of organic solvents.

Description of key information

Solubility of captan was determined to be in maximum 3.77 mg/L at 25°C by HPLC detection. Captan is well known to be unstable in water with half-life times of 2.7 h.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Water solubility:
3.77 mg/L
at the temperature of:
25 °C

Additional information

Water solubility of captan which was determined by flask method is about 3.77 mg/L at 25°C. Solubility is therefore assessed to be very low resulting in low emissions in aqueous process steps. Additionally the half-life time of 4.9 hours indicates low stability either.
