DSC measurements of captan technical in a glass crucible under inert nitrogen atmosphere demonstrated an exothermic decomposition in a range between 180°C and 300°C. The results were analysed by the software STARe by integration of the heating curve. The resulting exothermic decomposition energy was -487 J/g.

In respect to Manual of Dangerous Goods, Manual of test and criteria, 5th revised edition, New York and Geneva, 2009, Appendix 6, 3.3 (c), P440 substances are not explosive with decomposition energies < 500 J/g and a thermal and mechanical main test is not necessary.

By a DSC measurement ist was demonstrated that captan is decomposing with an exothermic energy of lower than 500 J/g leading to an assessment of captan being non-explosive.

This is in accordance to expert judgements as functional groups well known leading to explosion are missing.
