Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Depending on local conditions and existing concentrations, disturbances in the biodegradation process of activated sludge is possible.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The inhibition of microbial activity by glutaraldehyde 50% was determined by measurement of oxygen consumption of the activated sludge in the respiration inhibition test according to OECD Guideline 209 ( BASF AG 97/0329/08/1). The oxygen consumption was measured for 6-10 minutes after an incubation time of 30 minutes at nominal test concentrations of 10, 100, 248, 500, and 1000 mg/L. The EC20 of glutaraldehyde in the activated sludge respiration test was about 30 mg/L (= 15 mg a.i./L) referring to the test material as such; the EC50 was 160 mg/L (= 80 mg a.i./L).

The bacterial growth inhibition effect of glutaraldehyde to Pseudomonas putida was investigated according to DIN 38412, part 8 (BASF AG 01/88/0011). Pseudomonas putida cultures were incubated for 17 hours testing the following nominal concentrations: 3.91, 7.81, 15.63, 31.25, 62.5, 125, 250 and 500 mg/L. Optical cell density was measured at 436 nm. The EC10 value was determined as 8.8 mg/L (4.4 mg a.i./L).

In conclusion, glutaraldehyde showed an inhibitory effect on activated sludge and Pseudomonas putida.
