Several studies showed that glutaraldehyde is stable against hydrolysis under environmental conditions. However, at pH 9 oligomerized products of glutaraldehyde were reported as degradation products. These products were no hydrolysis products but resulted from condensation of aldehyde groups. Photodegradation was estimated using version 1.92 of the Atmospheric Oxidation Program (AOP). The half-life (8.2 h) indicates that after evaporation or exposure to the atmosphere, the substance will be rapidly degraded by photochemical processes. The photolysis of C14-labelled glutaraldehyde in aqueous media was investigated according to EPA Guideline 161-2. The results showed that glutaraldehyde is photolytically stable in aqueous, unsensitized test solutions.
