Description of key information

Glutaraldehyde is photolytically stable in aqueous test solutions.

The photolysis of C14-labelled glutaraldehyde was investigated according to EPA Guideline 161-2 (ABC Laboratories 32739). The test duration was 20 days, which is equivalent to 36 days of natural sunlight (12 hours/day) in the sensitized acetone system and to 34 days of natural sunlight in the sensitized acetonitrile and the unsensitized systems.

Results revealed a first order photolysis rate. Under sensitized conditions equivalent to 36 days of natural sunlight (12 hours/day; sensitized acetone system) and to 34 of natural sunlight (12 hours/day; sensitized acetonitrile system), glutaraldehyde was subjected to photolytic degradation with a half-life of respectively 18 (acetone) and 49 days (acetonitrile); no photodegradation was observed under darkness. Under non-sensitized conditions, no photodegradation of glutaraldehyde occurred.

In conclusion, glutaraldehyde is photolytically stable in aqueous, unsensitized test solutions.
