The key study shows that maleic anhydride is readily biodegradable.

According to the readily biodegradable property of maleic anhydride, it can be predicted that the maleic anhydride can also be biodegraded fast in natural soil.

Taking account of that in the water only maleic acid exists, and the easy biodegradation and low adsorption to the sediment of maleic anhydride, simulation biodegradation test in sediment is unnecessary.
