Description of key information

The partition coefficient was estimated by fragment constant methodolgy using KOWWIN v 1.67. Using the software the test material has been predicted to have a minimum Log Pow of 7.5, this being the monomer of the polymer. With a molecular weight of approximately 1433 the Log Pow was estimated to be 16.06. Since Log Pow greater than 8 are considered to be scientifically unreliable, it was considered that a value of >8 was the most realistic value of partition coefficient.

Additional information

No determination of the partition coefficient by OECD Guideline Method 107 or 117 was possible. The test material exhibited the properties of a surfactant in the octanol water system, thus preventing the determination by the shake-flask method. Estimation by the HPLC method was not possible in the absence of suitable calibration standards and since ionic compounds interact with HPLC columns by forces other than partitioning, such as interaction with free silanols present on the stationary phase. The ratio of the solubility in n-octanol to its solubility in water was not a valid estimation method either due to the self-aggregation properties of surfactants. Finally the test material has a chemical structure that resembles a surfactant, i.e. a polar head with a long carbon chain and approximately 25% unreacted glycerol and polyglycerol, both of which would cause emulsification. Therefore, the partition coefficient was estimated by fragment constant methodology using KOWWIN v 1.67.
