Chromium(III) hydroxide is insoluble between pH 6.8 and 11.5 (see section 4.8). The main toxic principle of Chromium(III) hydroxide is dissolved Cr(III). Therefore significant terrestric toxicity is not expected in this pH range, because Cr(III) is not available. There are a number of studies available for water soluble Cr(III) salts, that cover the pH range < pH 6.8 and > pH11.5.

The 8 wk NOEC of earth worms (Eisenia fetida) was 46000 mg Chromium(III)/kg ww based on growth for the insoluble Chromium(III) oxide. The 3 wk of NOEC 34 – 280 mg Chromium(III) /kg soil dw was determined for Chromium(III) nitrate (reproduction – growth, cocoon production (Earthworms, Eisenia Andrei)

For terrestrial plants (grain species) the 5mo NOEC was 200 – 631 mg Chromium(III)/kg soil dw growth (Chromium(III) acetate).

The HC5-50% = 5.9 mg Chromium(III)/kg and HC5-95% = 2.1 mg Chromium(III)/kg of Chromium(III) chloride was calculated for microorganisms responsible for soil processes.
