Lithium nitride reacts with water and moisture (e.g. on the skin) forming alkaline solutions of ammonia and lithium hydroxide. Both substances are able to irreversibly damage eyes, skin and respiratory tract. Lithium nitride is therefore classified as skin corrosive.
