Description of key information

The water solubility of ammonium fluoride is reported to be 835 g/L H2O at 25°C, which is recalculated to 455 g/L (units of mass per volume of solution as specified in guidance documents). Thus ammonium fluoride can be considered as very soluble.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Water solubility:
455 g/L
at the temperature of:
25 °C

Additional information

The CRC Handbook of chemistry and physics, 91st ed. (2010) reported a water solubility value for ammonium fluoride of 835 g/L H2O at 25°C. An earlier version of the same handbook (65th ed.) reported the water solubility of ammonium fluoride to be 1000 g/L H2O at 0°C.

In a review article by Rakov and Mel'nichenko (1984) the water solubility of ammonium fluoride is stated to be 45.38% at 25°C.

As the units for these different sources are different and the "Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment - Chapter R.7a: Endpoint specific guidance" (ECHA, 2008) defines water solubility as the solubility of a substance in water which is specified in units of mass per volume of solution. We recalculated the value of the key study, being 835 g/L H2O at 25°C, and obtained a value for water solubility of 455 g/L. This value is in agreement with the 45.38% (i.e. 453.8 g/L) at 25°C given by Rakov and Mel'nichenko (1984).

Thus, ammonium fluoride can be considered as very soluble.
