Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

No experimental data are available for 4,4'-methylenebis(2,6-xylidine) (CAS 4073 -98 -7). The biodegradability was assessed in a weight-of-evidence approach. Read across was made to the analogue substances 4,4'-methylenebis(2-methylaniline) (CAS 838 -88 -0) and N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-4,4'-methylenedianiline (CAS 101 -61 -1).

The biodegradability of 4,4'-methylenebis(2-methylaniline) was tested in a respirometric degradation and toxicity test following a BASF standard method, using industrial activated sludge. After 22 days of incubation the degradation degree was < 10% (BASF AG, 1981, report no.: 38/81).

N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-4,4'-methylenedianiline was found to be poorly biodegradable in a ready biodegradability test according to OECD 301F using domestic activated sludge. After a test period of 28 days, the degradation was 0 -10% based on BOD/ThOD (BASF AG, 1998, 97/0545/26/1).

This results are supported by a BIOWIN estimation for 4,4'-methylenebis(2,6-xylidine) (CAS 4073 -98 -7) indicating poor ready biodegradability potential.

In addition, in an experimental study on inherent biodegradation similar to OECD 302B (Zahn-Wellens-Test) of the analogue substance 4,4'-methylenebis(2-methylaniline) (CAS 838 -88 -0) it was observed that the substance is indeed easily eliminated from water (> 90 % after 3 h based on DOC), but mainly due to adorption to the solid phase.

In conclusion, the substance is regarded as not readily biodegradable.
