Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

A summary of all of the physical chemical properties end points is presented in the table below:-

Physical / Chemical Property

  Appearance /physical state/colour

 4.1

2,4 -Dichlorophenol is a white crystalline solid / powder with a strong, unpleasant, characteristsic and penetrating phenolic type odour.

This section contains details from several references. Not all advise on colour or odour

 Melting Point  4.2  45°C
Boiling Point  4.3  210°C   The references cited from which the value is concluded report a boiling point range from 207 to 211°C
Density  4.4 1.400 g/ml at 49 (+/- 0.5 )°C   This value is from a key study. Additional supporting values (at a different temperature) are provided in the SIDS dossier
Particle size distribution (Granulometry)  4.5 A waiver argument is proposed not to perform a granulometry study for 2,4 -Dichlorophenol. Although this substance is a solid at room temperature it is manipulated in the molten form. Therefore, it is proposed that performing a granulometry is not relevant, necessary or justified.
Vapour pressure  4.6 12 Pa at 25°C   One key modern, GLP study is presented with twelve references from the literature as supporting data. The valure reported is taken from the key study.
 Partition Coefficient  4.7 3.25 at  20°C

Many values are reported in the literature for the partition coefficient for 2,4-dichlorophenol. 3.25 at  20°C is the highest reliable value reported (A value of 3.41 is reported in the Canadian National Committee for CODATA (CNC/CODATA although there is no indication as to the reliability of this value) . In accordance with ECHA guidance where variations are reported the highest reliable value should take precedence.

Water Solubility  4.8 4.87g/l at 19.7°C    One key study modern, GLP study is presented with eight references from the literature as supporting data. The valure reported is taken from the key study.
 Surface Tension  4.10

The surface tension of a solution of 2,4 -dichlorophenol (1.003 g/L) was determined to be 65 mN/m at 20°C

2,4 -Dichlorophenol is considered not to be a surface-active material.

 Flash Point  4.11

110°C

The value reported is from a key modern day study
 Auto Flammability  4.12

The study does not need to be conducted since the melting point of 2,4 -dichlorophenol is <

160°C

 Flammability  4.13

2,4-Dichlorophenol is not pyrophoric, it is not flammable in contact with water and displays no flammable properties with respect to gases, liquids or solids. Therefore, it is not considered relevant, necessary or justified to perform a flammability study.

Explosiveness  4.14 2,4-Dichlorophenol does not contain any chemical functional groups that will confer explosive properties on the substance. In addition, based on its calculated oxygen balance it is unlikely to self detonate. Therefore, it is concluded that it is not justified, relevant or necessary to perform an explosivity study.
Oxidising Properties  4.15 2,4-dichlorophenol does not possess any functional groups associated with oxidising properties which are active and thus capable of being released.

Furthermore, based on the calculated oxygen balance the substance has an oxygen deficit and is unlikely to release oxygen. Therefore, it is concluded that it is not justified, necessary or relevant to conduct an oxidising properties study on 2,4 -Dichlorophenol.
