According to two expert statements conducted by IBACON (2011 -0104 -DGO and 2011 -0102 -DGO) the testing of 1,7 -octadiene is technical not feasible in the aquatic environment due to the high volatility of the substance (vapour pressure: 18 haPa (2012 -0454 -DGP)).

Nevertheless one acute study is available for fish which resulted in an LC50-value of 12.5 mg/L after 48 hours. However, a 48 h test is not in line with today's standards and is regarded as not sufficient for the evaluation of the influence of 1,7 -octadiene on fish. Thus, to further cover the endpoint, calculations by using QSAR-models were performed. On that basis LC50-values between 1.27 and 2.68 mg/L were calculated for 1,7 -octadiene.

The short-term aquatic toxicity of 1,7 -octadiene on invertebrates and algae has also been evaluated on different QSAR-models resulting in a range of E(L)C50-values of 0.91 – 2.15 mg/L (48 h) for daphnids and EC50-values of 0.66 mg/L (72 h) and 1.27 mg/L (96 h) for algae based on growth rate.

The influence of 1,7 -octadiene on microorganisms was tested in a 3 h respiration test on activated sludge. The EC50 (3 h) was determined to be > 1000 mg/L.
