Currently viewing:

Administrative data

Endpoint:
activated sludge respiration inhibition testing
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: see 'Remark'
Remarks:
The data was evaluated by experts in a report of NATIONAL INDUSTRIAL CHEMICALS NOTIFICATION AND ASSESSMENT SCHEME(NICNAS), which is administered by the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission (NOHSC) of Australian Commission. Also the Data were determined using OECD test methods.

Sampling and analysis

Analytical monitoring:
no
Details on sampling:
The test substance was suspended in artificial sewage at nominal loadings of 20, 500 and 1,000 mg/L using a 30- minute sonication to assist dispersion. The test flasks were inoculated with sewage sludge bacteria and aerated for 30 minutes. Following aeration the contents of the flasks were poured into darkened 300 mL BOD bottles fitted with oxygen sensing electrodes.

Test solutions

Vehicle:
no
Details on test solutions:
The test substance was suspended in artificial sewage at nominal loadings of 20, 500 and 1,000 mg/L using a 30 minute sonication to assist dispersion.

Test organisms

Test organisms (species):
activated sludge of a predominantly industrial sewage, de-adapted

Study design

Test type:
static
Water media type:

Limit test:
yes

Test conditions

Reference substance (positive control):
yes
Remarks:
3,5-dichlorophenol

Results and discussion

Effect concentrations
Duration:
30 min
Dose descriptor:
other: inhibition of the rate of oxygen consumption
Effect conc.:
other: None of the tests indicated any significant inhibition of bacterial respiration compared with the controls
Details on results:
None of the tests indicated any significant inhibition of bacterial respiration compared with the controls.
Results with reference substance (positive control):
In contrast to the BDP, the reference substance with 3,5-dichlorophenol inhibited bacterial respiration by 7% at a test concentration of 3.2 mg/L, and 84% at 32 mg/L.

Any other information on results incl. tables

It was concluded that the BDP is not toxic to sewage bacteria up to the limits of its water solubility.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Validity criteria fulfilled:
yes
Remarks:
An OECD guideline test by peer reviewed
Conclusions:
It was concluded that the BDP is not toxic to sewage bacteria up to the limits of its water solubility.
